An Important Group of Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain from the William Augustus Russell Dinner Service, mid-19th c., including four covered vegetable dishes, 9 1/2 in.; a round bowl with distinctive scalloped edge, 10 in.; two covered sauce tureens and oval undertrays, 8 in.; a large covered soup tureen and oval undertray, 16 in.; and ten dinner plates, 10 in.; each piece monogrammed with entwined initials "WAR" for William Augustus Russell (1831-1899), all decorated in famille rose enamels, with panels of court scenes showing figures at leisurely pursuits within garden pavilions, these alternating with various bird and butterfly floral vignettes, all reserved on a gilt ground with scrolling vine decoration.   • Notes: Note: William Augustus Russell (1831-1899) was a United States Representative from Massachusetts. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1868 and 1876, and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh, and Forty-eighth Congresses (March 4 1879 - March 3, 1885). Other leading Americans who ordered initialed services in this style include Tennessee Civil War hero Samuel P. Carter (1819-1891); Daniel Ammen (1820-1898); William Henry Seward (1801-1872); and General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), whose service of nearly 300 pieces was delivered to the White House shortly after his 1869 inauguration.
