Description:

An Important Large Paris Porcelain Figural Mantel Clock, mid-19th c., attributed to Jacob Petit, a three-part case, an Elizabethan family of five and dog modeled in the round, enjoying a musical interlude; the bronze dial centered with a floral bouquet, rocaille base, movement marked 'L.E.P. Japy & Cie', height 21 in., width 16 in., depth 12 in. Note: All three components are inscribed 'MA' in underglaze blue, for the Margaine decorating workshop, active in Paris 1839-1867; the shell-form feet are more elaborate versions of parallel forms on a Jacob Petit vase of 1832, while the green ground, gilt sprays, and floral reserves are identical to those on a Petit mantel garniture of c. 1840; the dial is a more developed version of an Angevin model of c. 1825; Paris Porcelain, London, 1972, pp. 61, 187, 241, and 249.
