An Important Late Regency Mahogany Side Table, early 19th c., after a design by George Smith, the backsplash with a central cornice over a bracketed panel, the rectangular top above three frieze drawers, on massive monopodia supports, each of tapered columnar shape with lotus leaves, crowned by a deep relief carved Ionic capital, the paw foot articulated with rounded knuckles and exposed nails, the twin paneled rear supports flanked by pilasters, on molded plinths, height 48 in., width 88 in., depth 28 in E15000-20000 Note: In 1807 Thomas Hope published his illustrated folio entitled Household Furniture and Interior Decorations, with designs strictly adhering to original antique forms minimally altered for 'modern' use The following year George Smith, Hope's disciple, began his series of publications, A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, in the most Approved and Elegant Taste which was well-received and continued through the late 1820's Monopodia supports of all variations can be seen in the designs by these two men The shapes are almost always architectural, sturdy and massive, if not monumental A related table was sold in these rooms April 5th, 2003, lot #466.
