An Important Pair of American Classical Mahogany Knife Boxes, early 19th c., attributed to Joseph Barry, Philadelphia, each with paneled lift top opening to fitted interior, above a Gothic arch panel flanked by Corinthian columns, stepped base, height 17 3/4 in., width 13 1/2 in., depth 13 3/4 in.
- Notes: Note: The proportions, cabinetwork and ornament on these knife boxes are nearly identical to the boxes en suite with the well-known Rebecca Gratz (1783-1869) sideboard attributed to Joseph Barry (Philadelphia, wc. 1810-1822). The Gratz sideboard descended in the family until 1973; it was purchased by Andy Warhol and acquired from his estate by Winterthur in 1988 The pair of knife boxes offered here feature tiered acanthus capitals on reeded columns with disc bases varying in the "Egyptian" mode from the Gratz example.
