An Important Set of Four New York Classical Mahogany Sidechairs, c. 1820, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, each top rail inlaid with blind panel of figured mahogany outlined in ebony and flanked by five reeded bars, the elliptical splat centered by a rosette, the channeled uprights above a trapezoidal seat frame containing a drop-in cushion, each saber leg fronted by acanthus continuing to hairy carved ankles, ending in paw feet; seat frame secondary wood: ash; slip seat secondary woods: ash and cherry; retaining original surface, height 32 in. E7000/10000 Note: Plate 165 in Nancy McClelland's Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency 1795-1830 illustrates a closely related chair: the crestrail with pair of reeded bars, the splat and leg are virtually identical.
