An Important Set of Six Regency Oak and Holly Chairs, c. 1815-1820, by George Bullock (b. 1777), including a pair of armchairs, the inside of each front seat rail stamped with an "L" (possibly for library), each with a concave top rail inlaid with flowers and foliage flanked by concentric bosses, the pierced foliate carved splat centered by a marquetry rosette, the stiles channeled with ebony continuing through the rails and legs, the upholstered seat designed to cover the front seat rail, the legs joined by quarter round segments, the knees mounted with bosses, height 35 in. E10000-15000 Note: The drawing for these chairs can be found in the Wilkinson Tracings, a scrapbook of tracings and engravings containing designs by George Bullock compiled by Thomas Wilkinson in 1820, and conserved by the Birmingham City Museum. From 1816-1818 Bullock supplied furniture to Tew Park, a large country house located in Oxfordshire owned by Matthew Robinson Boulton, the son of noted silversmith Matthew Boulton A complete set of records documenting the Bullock furniture at Tew Park was discovered in the 1980s. It lists two sets of chairs which Bullock provided for the library. Aside from the Tew Park furnishings, Bullock's most famous commission was to provide the furnishing of Longwood House, Napoleon's final residence, on St. Helena.
