Description:

An Important William IV Brass and Steel Campaign Bed, c. 1830-1840, the arches and folding tester frame raised on columnar supports surmounted by spherule finials, the rails joined by tubular legs and folding central legs, ending in brass casters, the tester frame festooned with peach colored drapery, the rails fitted with mattress and retaining a pair of balusters, the entire bed designed for quick field assembly and portage, height 83in., width 39in., length 75in. E3500-5000 Note: Campaign or "knockdown" furniture was only available to commissioned officers of means in 19th century Britain. Although requiring porters to transport the various components, it was designed to fold or disassemble quickly in the field. Most are extremely well made and afford luxury as well as durability. Their rarity adds to their importance and military enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike actively collect campaign furniture. A similar campaign bed is illustrated and discussed in The Magazine Antiques, "Georgian Campaign Furniture", in June 2000, plates VIIA and VIIB.
