An Impressive American Carved Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1880, in the manner of Anthony Gabriel Quervelle, probably Potthast, Baltimore, the bowed center section surmounted by a rectangular panel, the ogee molded cornice supported by monopodia and flanked by pierced cornucopia brackets, each architectural side cabinet designed with an Ionic scroll, containing a long drawer and above a smaller drawer, the paneled door fronted by a raised diamond, the pairs of bold acanthus carved monopodia raised on a broken fronted plinth resting on suppressed ball feet, height 63 in., width 49 in., depth 23.5in. E4000/6000 Note: This sideboard has interesting and significant characteristics relating to furniture made by Anthony Gabriel Quervelle (1789- 1856), one of Philadelphia's most important cabinetmakers during the second quarter of the 19th c. The sideboard incorporates antique and period elements and is probably a custom ordered piece made by Potthast Brothers of Baltimore, Maryland. This firm was established in the later part of the nineteenth century and specialized in dining room furniture.
