Lot 169
An Interesting American Carved Walnut Armchair, mid-19th c, Philadelphia, the oval molded back crested in a cartouche, the padded arms raised on scrolled supports fronted by hound masks, the serpentine-outlined seat resting on cabriole legs., height 44in. E700 900 Note: Interestingly, a key example of Philadelphia furniture incorporating similar figural arm terms is a tete-a-tete from the original furnishings at Melrose Plantation (Natchez, Mississippi) as well as an analogous piece offered in these rooms on February 8, 2003 lot 279. The mask armrests recall animal heads used by George G. Henkels on a fall-front desk now in the High Museum of Art (Atlanta). Another possible origin of this group may be Charles White, a prominent Philadelphia cabinetmaker who used figural elements.
