Description:

An Interesting Early Oak Settle, late 18th/early 19th c., possibly Acadian, having an arcaded and paneled back, plank seat, scrolled arms, with turned supports and legs connected by molded stretchers, height 46 in., width 71 in., depth 20 in. E1200/2000 Provenance: The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Lafayette, Louisiana. By repute, this bench was removed from the church at the time of the "re- building" in 1916. The early Acadian families who built the first St. John of Vermilion church used timbers taken from an old sugar mill on the property (the land of Jean Mouton). This site has been described as "next to a stately live oak tree". Reference: The Cathedral of Saint John The Evangelist, pub. 1996, by St. John Cathedral.
