Led by barrister and schoolteacher Patrick Pearse, a member of the Irish Volunteers, and joined by individuals from James Connolly's Irish Citizen Army, key buildings including the Post Office were seized in Dublin. The Rising was suppressed after six days of fighting and the leaders executed. Survivors of the rebellion convened in January 1919, and succeeded in establishing the Irish Republic.
