Description:

An Italian White and Variegated Marble Bust of Homer, atop a painted faux marbre pedestal with bronze mounts, bust height 36 in., width 30 1/2 in., depth 14 in.; pedestal height 46 in., width 20 in., depth 15 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: This impressive bust is a version of a well-known type representing Homer, of which good prototypes are in both the Naples National Museum and the Louvre, Paris. The characteristics which prove the identification are the hair, beard, and moustache, the thin fillet across the bangs over the forehead, the long nose, and the ferocious "squint" of Homer's blind eyes. Of the two models, that in the Louvre is the more exact in all these particulars, and is evidently the source for the present version-a point emphasized by the French base on which it sits.
