Description:

Andres Molinary (Gibraltar/New Orleans, 1847-1915), "Portrait of a Young Girl in a Bed of Roses", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 52 1/4 in. x 36 1/4 in., in a gilt frame. Note: A talented landscape and portrait artist, Andres Molinary combined his interests to create this charming portrait of a "Young Girl in a Bed of Roses." She is attired in beautiful white dress with a pink ribbon that matches the abundant roses growing in the garden. The idyllic setting with the fountain in the background alludes to the affluence of the child's family. After traveling extensively as a young man throughout Europe, Mexico and South America, Molinary arrived in New Orleans to visit his uncle, a partner in an import business. Encouraged by his uncle, Molinary pursued a career as a professional artist. A leader in the emerging art community at the turn of the century, Molinary was instrumental in founding the Southern Art Union, Cup and Saucer Club and Artists' Association of New Orleans.
