An Anglo-Colonial Carved Hardwood Reclining Chair, mid-19th c., related to the designs of Lockwood de Forest (American, 1850-1932) and William Morris (English, 1834-1896), rectangular adjustable back, shaped arms, square uprights, floral blocks, serpent entwined legs, height 41 in., width 29 in., depth 41 in Note: The chair presented here shares its form with that of chairs designed by William Morris. The carvings appear to be closely related to those found in pieces attributed to Lockwood de Forest. De Forest was with the Associated Artists in 1879 prior to being in India where he opened the Ahmedabad Wood Carving Company with a local philanthropist. After supplying the Associated Artists until their close in 1882 de Forest returned to New York to open his own design firm.
