Description:

Anglo-Colonial Carved Rosewood Chest of Drawers, 19th c., four drawers, carved throughout with rope motifs, Gothic arches and quatrefoils, shaped feet, h. 45 1/4 in., w. 44 1/4 in., d. 24 in. Note: Though likely made by an apprentice craftsman with the indigenous rosewood of Asia Minor, this chest borrows elements of English Regency and Gothic Revival design raging in 1820’s London. Most notably seen in George Smith’s 1828 Cabinet Maker’s and Upholsterer’s Guide and W.N. Pugin’s interiors in Ackerman’s Repository of the Arts, 1811-1828. Interestingly, the “Gothic” arch of Medieval European architecture and seen here, has its origins in the Central Asian Sassanic Empire in of the 7th c. A.D., territory of the British Empire in the 19th c.
