Anna Colquitte Hunter (American/Savannah, Georgia, 1892-1985), 'Dem Bones Gonna Rise Again', oil on canvas, signed lower right, 15in x 18in E1200-1800 Note: Born into an Old Savannah family, Anna Hunter left college early to marry and raise a family Tragically, her husband died in his forties, leaving Hunter to raise and support her three children alone Following in the footsteps of her sister who was a successful journalist, she worked for the Savannah Morning News and Evening Press To qualify as the art critic, Hunter decided that it was important for her to know how to paint, so she taught herself As an artist, Hunter received critical acclaim for her folk art paintings of life in the South The painting 'Dem Bones Gonna Rise Again' shows Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the serpent and the Holy Spirit up above In the painting, Hunter also references the Southern African-American spiritual 'Dem Dry Bones' based on Ezekiel 37.
