Antoine Chazal (French, 1793-1854), "An Ostrich", watercolor on paper signed lower right and dated "1834", 6 3/4 in. x 3 3/4 in. E2000- 3000 Note: Chazal had his debut at the Paris Salon in 1822, and was awarded a medal there in 1831. He was "Professeur d'Iconographie," or drawing, at the Jardin des Plantes (the Paris Zoo), where he encouraged his close contemporaries Antoine Barye and EugŠne Delacroix to "draw from life" after zoological subjects. He was knighted with the L‚gion d'Honneur in 1838.
