Anton Mauve (Dutch, 1838-1888), "The Shepherd with His Flock", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 18 3/4 in. x 28 1/4 in., in a modern wood frame. Allen Memorial Art Museum. http://www.oberlin.edu/amam/mauve_storm.htm Note: Mauve was a Dutch realist painter acclaimed for his precise and detailed depictions of peasants and animals; his paintings of grazing sheep were particularly popular in America. Along with his friends and fellow painters William Maris (1844-1910, Hendrik Mesdag (1831-1915), and Josef Israels (1824-1911), Mauve was a member of the Hague School, the Dutch equivalent of the Barbizon School. These artists, and their followers, were committed to faithfully capturing the atmosphere of the Dutch landscape. Mauve studied in Haarlem under Pieter Frederick van Os (1808-1892) -- who instilled in him the importance of the Dutch 18th c. tradition of landscape painting-- and Wouterus Verschur (1812-1874). Mauve later worked in cities across the Netherlands. His wife's cousin, Vincent Van Gogh, was his student for a while. References: Bénézit.
