Anton Schonborn (American, d. 1871), "Fort Laramie, W.T. in 1868/View from the South", watercolor on paper, signature and title affixed to matte, oval sight 5 .125in. x 12.25in. E3000-5000 Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Major General Christopher Colon Augur during His time at Fort Laramie. Thence by descent to the present owner. Augur served at Fort Laramie as a commissioner at the peace treaty talks with the Sioux. A transcript of the Commission's recommendation to the President and Congress, as well as a transcript of the peace treaty accompany this lot. Note: Anton Schonborn was employed by the United States government on topographical surveys. He took part in the William Raynolds Survey, the Yellow River Expedition of 1859 and the Boseman Trail Expedition of 1868 He also depicted many of forts in the Western Territories. There is an album of eleven of Schonborn's watercolors of similar subjects in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (see catalogue of 1984
