  • Provenance: Provenance: Listed in Antonio Jacobsen-The Checklist, Paintings and Sketches, 1850-1921, compiled by Harold S. Sniffen, Curator Emeritus, The Mariners¹ Museum, Sanford & Patricia Smith Galleries, Ltd, New York, 1984, no. 31. Note: From his Hoboken, New Jersey, studio, Antonio Jacobsen painted "portraits" of newly built ships from the blue prints, sketches and pictures supplied by the shipping company. Frequently, these paintings were commissioned to hang in the port offices of the ships. In the late 19th c., Jacobsen worked for the three steamship lines that were based in New Orleans: The Morgan Line, New Orleans Belize Royal Mail and The Central American Steamship Company. The steamer El Rio was built for the Morgan Line and carried cargo continuously between the ports of New York and New Orleans; it was at the time the largest and fastest ship in the Morgan Line.
