Description:

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921), "SS Louisiana", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1900" and inscribed "31 Palisade Av., West Hoboken", lower right, 16.5in. x 30.25in., in a period giltwood frame. E15000/20000 Note: Known as the "Audubon of Steam Vessels," Antonio Jacobsen studied art at the Royal Academy of Design in Copenhagen and immigrated to America in 1871. Jacobsen found work painting decorations on safes for the Marvin Safe Company in New York City. Eventually he turned his attention towards painting portraits of ships. From 1876 to 1909, the three New Orleans based steamer lines of Morgan Line, New Orleans Belize Royal Mail, and Central American Steamship Company commissioned Jacobsen extensively. Jacobsen's paintings of ships were often based on the plans and blueprints supplies by the companies.
