Lot 60
A Pair of George III Paint-Decorated Satinwood Armchairs, late 18th c., possibly Seddon, Sons & Shackleton, London, in the Adam taste, each with shield back, shaped arms, caned seat, square tapered legs, cuffed feet. Note: The underside of the seat rail is stamped "IP" Note: This pair of armchairs is very similar to three armchairs that survive from a large suite of painted satinwood seat furniture supplied about 1790 to the Tupper family for Hauteville House, St. Peter Port, Guernsey. The suite, which included eighteen chairs, a settee, three window seats, and two fire screens, was made by the firm of Seddon, Sons & Shackleton, one of the largest furniture makers in London at the end of the eighteenth century. The three chairs are now part of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Two of the chairs are stamped "IP" under the rear seat rail. It is believed that the stamp is the mark of a journeyman cabinetmaker employed by Seddon, Sons & Shackleton. Another recorded example of a chair stamped "IP" was included in the Swaythling Collection in 1965.
Starting Price: USD 2600
