Description:
Scene in the Adirondacks", oil on canvas board, signed and dated 1875 lower left, 16" x 22 1/2", original ornate antique period gilt frame. Provenance: Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, New York, to Garland Langley Hall Simmons, Charleston, South Carolina, to Hubert Schnidler (Antique Shoppe), Charleston, South Carolina, to the consignor, this painting shows Parton's deviation from his earlier tighter realism of the Hudson River School, and this work exemplifies the transitional works between the academic school style and that of American Impressionism.
