Lot 112
Attributed to Adam Pynacker (Dutch, 1622-1673), "Italianate Landscape with Peasants and their Cattle", oil on panel, unsigned, 13.5in. x 18 375in. E5000/7000 Provenance: Taylor Clark Galleries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1965. Note: In both style and subject matter, Adam Pynacker belongs to the group of Netherlandish artists known as the Dutch Italianates. Pynacker spent three years in Italy, probably from 1645 to 1648, and then returned to Delft in his native Holland where he quickly became a reknowned and prolific painter. Many characteristics of the work offered here compare favorably with a number of documented Pynacker paintings. The branches and leaves of the tree in the left foreground as depicted against the sky are indicative of Pynacker's hand. The wooded landscape with shepherds and their cattle is a common subject in his oeuvre. Additionally, the colors used in the peasants' clothing are found in documented Pynacker compositions, and the stance of the female figure resembles that in a harbor scene painted in 1650.
