Lot 492
Attributed to Auguste Raffet (French, 1804-1860), c. 1830-1840, Regimental Gathering before the Pantheon, oil on canvas, 51 in. x 67. 5in., unframed. E3000/5000 Note: Raffet began studying painting at a very young age in the studios of Cabanal Charlet and Gros. He painted in the style of Vernet, Charlet and Bellange. In 1831 when he was passed over for the Prix de Rome, he gave up the styles of his teachers and concentrated on personal inspiration which were the French military travails during the Revolution, the Campaign of the Empire and the Algerian War. He also turned primarily to lithography as a medium. Although not an eyewitness to these events he was a grand improvisor and was known to be more exact in detail than those who had actually been there. A lithograph that strongly resembles this composition is entitled Place du Pantheon, nuit de 22-23 Decembre 1830 and is housed in the collection of Brown University Library, ref. Benzit.
