Description:

Attributed to Edward Lear (English, 1812-1888), "A Rocky Coastal Scene on the Adriatic", oil on canvas, unsigned, 25 1/2 in. x 40 in., framed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Sold Sotheby's London, April 10 1991 as lot 197
  • Notes: Note: Best remembered today for his poetry, limericks, and "nonsense works", Lear was an accomplished natural history illustrator and landscape painter. At the age of 19 his book Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots was published to great acclaim, and he was favorably compared to John James Audubon (1785-1851). Lear spent several years traveling in Italy and along the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts before permanently settling in San Remo. He published several books on Italy and its surrounding areas, including "Views in Rome and its Environs" and "Illustrated Excursions in Italy", which included coastal and marine scenes similar to the present lot. Lear was a favorite of the English critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). He was a member of the Linnean Society of London and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Reference: Hyman. Edward Lear's Birds.
