Description:

Attributed to Gainsborough Dupont (English, 1754-1797), "Portrait of Colonel Hamilton", oil on canvas affixed to wood panel, unsigned, label reading "Portrait of Colonel Hamilton, 1767 by Dupont 1797" en verso, 29 in. x 24 in., in a giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: The sitter of this portrait is likely Douglas, 8th Duke of Hamilton (1756-1799), member of a prominent political family and the holder of the premier Scottish Peerage. There are several known images of Hamilton and this one most closely resembles the c. 1795 portrait by Sir Henry Raeburn (Scottish, 1756-1823), which originally hung in Hamilton Palace and is now at Lennoxlove, East Lothian. Hamilton was a Colonel in the American War of Independence, having organized and led the 82nd Regiment of Foot. He was a member of the English House of Lords and was appointed to the Order of the Knights of Thistle in 1786 Hamilton is perhaps most well-known for his amorous pursuits; in 1788 he was publicly convicted of adultery and later scandalized English and Scottish society by divorcing his wife Elizabeth Anne Burrell of Beckenham in 1794
