Attributed to Joseph Badger (American, 1708-1765)., "Portrait of Grandmother Allen", oil on canvas, unsigned, 36 in. x 28 in. E10000/15000 Joseph Badger, an early colonial portrait painter, was born in 1708 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He moved to Boston around 1733, and became one of the city's principal portrait painters, remaining active until his death, probably in Boston, in 1765. His work is owned by institutions including Worcester Art Museum and Bowdoin College, as well as many other private collections. This portrait, entitled "Grandmother Allen," is listed on page 49 of Richard Nylander's 1972 thesis, Joseph Badger, American Portrait Painter. Grandmother Allen was probably Mary Allen of Newton, Massachusetts, who married a merchant named John Allen. According to information from the New England Historical and Geneological Society, Mary Allen lived from 1697 to 1752. Joseph Badger painted this portrait of her c. 1750. The portrait eventually was passed to her granddaughter, Mary Townsend Derby who married John Barton Derby. Provenance: John and Mary Allen of Newton, Mass.
