Lot 496
"Portrait of a Little Girl holding a Basket of Cherries", oil on canvas mounted on board, oval 21 1/2" x 17 1/2", oval gilt frame. Note: Joshua Johnson is noted for being the first black portrait artist in America for whom there is an extant body of work. His greatest activity as a painter was in Baltimore from 1803-1813/14. His earliest commissions came from important Baltimore families who had previously patronized members of the Peale family. Johnson painted distinctively within the stylistic tradition of his contemporaries Charles Willson Peale, Charles Peale Polk, and Raphaelle and Rembrandt Peale.
