Attributed to Newell Convers Wyeth (American, 1882-1945), "The Elizabethan Galleons", oil on canvas, pencil-signed on stretcher "Ship The Elizabethan Galleons, N.C. Wyeth", 24 in. x 18 in., unframed. E5000/7000 Note: N. C. Wyeth was one of the principal artists of America's Golden Age of Illustration. A gifted artist he illustrated the covers of Saturday Evening Post, Scribner's Magazine,Harper's Weekly, Century, and Cosmopolitan as well as painting illustrations for children's books. Wyeth also had an impressive career as a mural painter. The painting "The Elizabethan Galleons" is a preliminary study for a large mural commissioned by the First National Bank of Boston. Completed in spring of 1924, the commission represented four historic periods of shipping.
