Attributed to Richard Clague (American/New Orleans, 1821-1873), "Landscape with Waterfall", oil on canvas, unsigned, 19in. x 25in. E7000-10000 Provenance: The painting (lot 469) was exhibited and reproduced in the catalogue for the Richard Clague retrospective organized by New Orleans Museum of Art, 1974, # 7, pages 34 and 56 Accompanying this lot is a copy of the Richard Clague New Orleans Museum of Art exhibition catalogue. Note: The son of a wealthy businessman and a French Creole mother, Richard Claque spent his childhood in both Paris and New Orleans As a teenager, Richard was sent to Switzerland and then to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to receive a formal education in the fine arts At the Ecole, Clague was influenced by the emergence of the Barbizon artists and their interest in plein-aire landscapes. The painting "Landscape with Waterfall" was probably done while Clague was in Europe in the 1840's. This beautifully crafted painting illustrates the talented abilities of the young emerging artist.
