Description:

Attributed to Sir John Opie (British, 1761-1807), "Portrait of Mrs. Maria Kenyon Jones Walley of Scarborough", oil on canvas, unsigned, handwritten label identifying sitter en verso, 49 in. x 39 in., ornate gilt frame. Provenance: Christie's, May 4, 1907; "Highly Valuable Paintings from the Blakeslee Galleries, New York", Plaza Hotel, Apr. 21-23, 1915, lot 143; The Zigler Art Museum, Jennings, LA. Note: Sir John Opie, a child prodigy, was discovered by Dr. John Wolcot in 1775, when Opie was just fourteen years old. With Wolcot as his mentor, Opie soon gained a following, first in Cornwall, then in London. In the current lot, the finely painted dress and accessories of the opulent late 1780s are demonstrative of the detail with which Opie reproduced his wealthy clients’ attire. Due to his meticulous brushwork, Opie’s works became popular at the court of King George III, and he was commissioned to paint several royal portraits, including the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Lady Harcourt. Eventually, Opie turned to grand historical scenes rather than the portraits for which he had become famous. Opie was elected to the Royal Academy in 1787 and was appointed professor of painting in 1806. Before his death in 1807, he worked tirelessly on a series of four lectures – the subjects being Design, Invention, Chiaroscuro, and Colouring – which were favorably received by his fellow academicians. The Blakeslee Galleries, located on Fifth Avenue in New York City, in whose collection this painting existed, were owned by Theron J. Blakeslee. In 1914, Blakeslee, learning of the potential failure of his galleries, committed suicide; his widow was advised by their attorney that public sale was most likely the best way to sell the majority of her assets. Nearly a year after Blakeslee’s death, the most valuable artwork in the collection was sold at auction at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Ref: "Opie, John". Dictionary of National Biography.
