Attributed to Thomas Willis (American, 1850-1925), 'Steam Sailer Alabama', c 1895, silk and velvet fabric on oil and canvas, 20in X 36 in, modern frame and glass E2000-4000 Note: At the age of twenty years old, Thomas Willis came to America from Denmark He worked for a silk embroidery thread maker in Brooklyn and became a 'manufacturer of silk pictures.' Willis became the best American marine embroidery and had numerous commissions from yachtsmen, sailors, sea captain and ship companies This depiction of the 'Steam Sailer Alabama' at sea has the rigging and details woven with silk thread and the hull made from velvet and placed on a painted background, all typical devices used by Willis.
