Lot 473
Aubrey Beardsley (British, 1872-1898), "Title Page Ornament for THE YELLOW BOOK, Volume I/Woman at the Piano", 1894, a pen and ink drawing on paper, 10.25 in. x 6.5 in., M. Knoedler & Co., New York label verso, together with an assembled set of "The Yellow Book: An Illustrated Quarterly", Volume I, April, 1894 through Volume XIII, April 1897, 13 total, most first editions. E5000-7000 Note: This "superb example of Beardsley's power to make black live" was drawn as a design for the title page of The Yellow Book Volume I, April, 1894. Henry Harland was the editor and Beardsley the art editor of The Yellow Book at the time. Beardsley's editorship only extended to the first four volumes. "As to The Yellow Book, I was one evening at the Hogarth Club, that is dead, when Beardsley and Harland rushed in and said, 'We are going to start a magazine.' I said, 'You can't.' They said, 'We can, and we have gotten some idiot, - John Lane is his name, to publish it for us.' I didn't dispute the adjective, for I honestly thought him an idiot to trust those two, but I said, 'Neither of you, not even with me to help you, can run a magazine, and you will ruin the publisher.' 'You will see.', they said." Extract from Aubrey Beardsley and Other Men of the Nineties by Joseph Pennell. Pennell Book Club, No. 3, Philadelphia, 1924.
