Augusta Denk Oelschig (Petressen) (American/Georgia, 1918-2000), "Four Sombreros", c. 1947, oil on canvas, signed lower right, Charleston Renaissance Gallery label en verso, 14 in. x 18 in., framed. Provenance: Steven Cabot Barnes Harvey (1949-1993) Collection of Southern Art. Note : Savannah-born artist Augusta Oelschig studied under Lamar Dodd at the University of Georgia in the late 1930s. She returned to Savannah, which was bustling not only with artists, but also with a successful group of female painters including Hattie Saussy, Emma Cheeves Wilkins and Mary Comer Lane. Oelschig's career flourished and in 1947 she married James Petressen whose name she used until their divorce in the early 1960s. The couple visited Mexico City for most of 1947 It was during this time that she most likely painted Four Sombreros employing the same empathetic eye she used to depict the residents of Savannah. Upon their return to the US, the couple settled in New York where Oelschig was represented by several important galleries. She returned to Savannah after her divorce and lived there until her death in 2000."
