Autograph Letter Signed by Samuel Swartwout, Burr Conspirator, to Governor C.C. Claiborne, letter, one sheet, folded, 2 pages, to His Excellency Governor Claiborne, dated On Board the Ketch Aetna, 16th Dec., 1806, relating his dismay at being detained without charges and in part: "I am informed by Comd. Shaw that Genl. Wilkinson has given orders for my imprisonment without legal power", and "I look and appeal for protection from tyranny & oppression", a short note added at the end by Claiborne, full text available.
- Notes: Note: A land speculator and a fundraiser for the Texas Revolution, Samuel Swartwout of New York became involved in the conspiracy involving Aaron Burr and General James Wilkinson to take over Louisiana and the western territory of the United States. When Wilkinson backed out of the deal, Burr and Swartwout were accused of treason and arrested. Although the District of Columbia District Court convicted the two men, they were later set free when they were acquitted by the Supreme Court.
