Benjamin Franklin Reinhart (American, 1827-1885, active New Orleans c 1859-62), Portrait of John Slidell (1795-1871), oil on canvas, signed and dated N.O. 1859 lower left, A.P. Bonete stenciled label en verso of stretcher, 34 in. x 27 in.(oval). E5000-7000 Note: The Pennsylvania artist Benjamin Franklin Reinhart had a studio in New Orleans from 1859 to 1861. While in the city, Reinhart established a partnership with the talented Charleston artist Theodore Sidney Moise. Reinhart left New Orleans after the beginning of the Civil War, but he did return briefly in 1862, when a military company was named in his honor for his financial support of the Confederacy. This elegant and beautifully rendered portrait of John Slidell depicts him during the time period he was a United States Senator from Louisiana. He later was the Confederate diplomatic agent to France. His wife Mathilde was the sister of Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard's second wife, Caroline Deslonde
