Description:

A Berlin Iron Cross on Interlocking Chain, early 19th c., possibly by Johann Conrad Geiss, openwork cross suspended from a pierced Gothic arch tracery and stylized foliate trefoil medallion with clasp modeled as a hand, cross length 3 1/4 in Note: Berlin Iron jewelry (also called Fer-de-Berlin) was originally manufactured to compensate Prussian citizens for contributing their precious jewelry to fund the Prussian War of Independence (1812-1814), which eventually drove Napoleon into exile. This fine openwork jewelry with delicate foliate and often Gothic motifs was cast using a highly refined iron which was then coated with black lacquer to prevent oxidation.
