In the 1960s, Sims was active in the Civil Rights Movement and participated in voter registration drives. In 1965, she took part in the Selma-Montgomery March and witnessed the events of "Bloody Sunday" between protesters and police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which would inspire this later canvas.
