Buell Whitehead (American/Florida, 1919-1993), "Erosion", oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed en verso, Carolina Fine Paintings and Prints, Charleston, SC, label en verso, 24 1/8 in. x 20 in., in a giltwood frame.
PLEASE NOTE: Buell Whitehead a native of Ft. Myers, Florida, graduated from the University of Florida where he majored in Art and later attended the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Whitehead was highly interested in the print medium of stone lithography and became a master of this craft. He was a prolific printmaker during the late 1940s and 1950s, and his work was widely displayed around the country. The work offered here, titled "Erosion", is a rare oil painting by the artist. Whitehead had family in the towns of Dothan and Geneva in southern Alabama and created scenes of this area such as "Erosion". Depicting a wide, rutted red clay road down the center of the composition, a fenced garden and homestead sit on the right side of the road. Stylistically evoking the work of the American Scene painters a generation before him, one can see influences of the work of John McCrady, particularly in the handling of the vast sky and the barren yet sculptural tree.
