Caroline Spellman Wogan Durieux (American/Louisiana, 1896-1989), "Benediction: Mexican Priest", lithograph, pencil-signed and dated "1932", initialed "C.D." in plate, pencil-numbered 2/10, Dario Mejia printer, Mexican Series, image 9 in. x 6 in., sheet 13 1/2 in. x 9 1/2 in., unframed. E400-600 Note: New Orleans artist Caroline Spellman Wogan Durieux and her husband Pierre moved to Mexico City in 1926. After being introduced to the field of printmaking during a trip to New York City, Durieux decided to try her hand at creating a series of lithographs. From 1932 to 1934, with the assistances of Dario Mej¡a, who did the actual printing, Durieux created eleven lithographs in small editions of ten prints. Working in the manner of Social Realism, this series of prints satirically looked at the Mexican Catholic clergy. The print "Benediction" depicts a priest of Indian descent in the midst of a blessing. Reference: H.
