A Monumental American Renaissance Carved and Burl Walnut Hall Stand, c. 1880, attributed to Daniel Pabst, outset cornice with relief frieze flanked by fish scale blocks, fluted pilasters ending in massive stylized lions' masques, bench resting on paw feet, molded plinth, height 98 in., width 57 1/2 in., depth 19 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Reverend Benjamin M. Palmer (1818-1902); from the estate of Cecilia Caldwell. Note: Rev. Palmer was pastor of First Presbyterian Church, New Orleans, from 1856 to 1902. He was the first moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America and of the Synod of Louisiana. Palmer established the Southwest Presbyterian Seminary, now Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN. Palmer Avenue in Uptown New Orleans is named for him, as is the Palmer Orphanage in Columbus, MS.
