Description:

American Aesthetic Carved and Burled Walnut Bedstead, c. 1875, attr. to Daniel Pabst, Philadelphia, carved cornice over inset panels carved with birds and flowers flanking central figured panel, carved brackets over paneled rails, conforming foot board, shaped and blocked base, h. 80 3/4 in., l. 75 in., w. 60 in. Condition Note: Top of bed has been altered. Note: Several features of the bedstead in the lot offered here relate directly to the work of Philadelphia cabinetmaker Daniel Pabst. Apart from the crest, this lot is an almost identical match to a bed made by Pabst for wealthy Colorado silver miner and Senator Horace Tabor, later sold to William Randolph Hearst, which is now in the collection of the History Colorado Center in Denver. The bedstead’s relief panels, finely carved with wildlife and flowers, relate to a Pabst sideboard held in the collection of The Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York.
