Description:

A Rare Pair of American Classical Carved and Gilt Stenciled Mahogany Encoignures, early 19th c., New York, each with quarter round top with fans and banding, frieze with fruit reserve, turned acanthus stenciled support, molded drum plinth, outswept legs ending in paw feet, height 36 in., width 33 in., depth 24 in Note: The extensive use of stenciling on this pair of encoignures points to their New York origin. The ornately turned moldings on the plinth relates to a labeled table by Edward Holmes (active 1821-42) that sold April 3, 2005 at Northeast Auctions as lot 1255. Of the small group of known labeled pieces by the firm of Holmes and Haines, most of those incorporate the use of elaborate gilt stencils.
