Description:

American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Etagere, mid-19th c., attr. to J. and J.W. Meeks, New York, reticulated crest with shield-shaped cartouche, mirrored back, flanked by demilune shelves, shaped marble top, conforming foliate scroll frieze and plinth base, turned feet, h. 99 1/2 in., w. 53 in., d. 22 in. Provenance: Neal Auction Company, Oct. 16, 1992, lot 589. Note: The upper section of this lot is very closely related to the distinctive crest and supports of an étagère held by the Newark Museum of Art (acc. 34.663A-C), included in the Centennial Exhibition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The lot offered here has more exuberant and sophisticated execution than the Newark example. Ref.: Tracy, Berry and Marilyn Johnson. 19th c. America, Furniture and Decorative Arts. New York: New York Graphic Society, 1970, fig. 124.
