Description:

Pair of American Carved, Creme Peinte and Parcel Gilt Cabinets in the Louis XVI Taste, late 19th c., New York, shaped molded top centered by inset variegated marble, three foliate and floral carved frieze drawers, glazed cabinet mounted with foliate swag and trumpet motif, flanked by shelves, fluted columnar supports, conforming foliate base, turned feet, h. 45 in., w. 59 in., d. 22 1/4 in. Note: The elegantly carved and painted cabinets shown here are closely related to French-influenced furniture made by the New York firm Herter Brothers—most notably the furniture from the firm’s commission for Thurlow Lodge in Menlo Park, California. Originally the William Barron estate, Thurlow Lodge was purchased by gold rush investor and California politician Milton S. Latham in 1871 and the Herter Brothers were chosen to design the mansion’s lavish interiors during the subsequent renovation. Shortly after the renovation began, the mansion burned to its foundation and was completely reconstructed in the French Second Empire style. During the reconstruction, Christian Herter, head of the Herter Brothers firm, had recently returned from Paris and applied the latest Second Empire designs to the opulent rooms of the newly constructed Thurlow Lodge. The pair of cabinets offered here are similar in style to a cabinet from Thurlow Lodge held in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, made by the Herter Brothers for Milton S. Latham. These cabinets also correlate to a crème peinte bedroom suite in the same French taste that was sold by Bonham’s in 2015, with provenance to Thurlow Lodge and the Herter Brothers commission.
