An American Neo-Grec Carved, Gilded, Incised, Ebonized and Inlaid Rosewood Side Cabinet, mid-19th c., New York, shaped top with a raised plinth centered by an exotic wood inlaid frieze, door with musical trophee, conforming paneled sides with outset scrolled brackets and turned discs, blocked base, height 48 1/2 in., width 60 in., depth 18 in.; in fine "estate" condition Note: Ambitious cabinets such as the lot offered here were intended for the most public room in a grand house, putting in evidence the good taste and prosperity of its owner with the use of exotic hardwoods, fine imported inlays, fashionable New Grec embellishments, and pedestal worthy of a fine clock or sculpture. This form exemplifies the apex of American Renaissance Revival style as presented by French émigré cabinet makers in New York City of the nineteenth century.
