Description:

American Federal Carved and Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1800-1810, attr. John Seymour, Boston, top with turreted corners and reeded edge, three short central drawers over one deep and two bottle drawers, each side drawer over cupboard with shelf interior, reeded pilasters, acanthus-carved and reeded vasiform legs, white pine secondary wood, h. 41 3/4 in., w. 67 in., d. 23 1/2 in. Note: The case form, distinctively carved stiles and reeded legs on this sideboard are very similar to those on a sideboard attributed to Seymour held by Ginsberg and Levy and another owned by T.H. Soren of Hartford, Connecticut in the 1950s. The carvings on all three of the aforementioned sideboards are likely the work of journeyman Thomas Whitman, who is known to have worked with the Seymours between 1805 and 1809. Moreover, the ivory escutcheons and shaded demilune inlay on this example are nearly identical to those found on the Soren sideboard as well as on many cases known from the Seymour shop.
