An American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Settee, c. 1850-60, attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, in the pattern known as "Tuthill King", height 44 in., width 68 in., depth 21 in Note: This lot features an exceptionally finely carved and pierced crest continuous with the laminated back. "Tuthill King", one of the Belter firm's more complex and high style patterns, takes its name from the parlor from the Tuthill King family home on South Michigan Avenue, which according to family lore, was saved from the Great Chicago Fire. It is now conserved by the Chicago Historical Society. Other Belter seat furniture in the "Tuthill King" pattern include chairs illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th c., p. 123; a sofa sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 384 September 21, 2008, and a sofa sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 941 October 6, 2007.
