American Rococo Carved Mahogany Full Tester Bed, mid-19th c., marked "C.Lee" and numbered "281" on bottom of post, arched crest with central cabochon and shell, molded paneled headboard, turned tapered posts, molded tester with egg-and-dart edge, shaped rails and foot board, disc feet, h. 108 1/2 in., l. 77 in., w. 64 1/2 in. Note: Abraded side rail, no finials, 4 casters and bed bolts present Note: Beds stamped "C. Lee" appear in the inventories of New Orleans furniture purveyors Calvin Chandler Simpson, John Yetter, and William Mc Cracken in the years leading to the Civil War. Research by scholar and curator Stephen Harrison has revealed Charles Lee (active 1856-1868) was a Manchester, Massachusetts craftsman known as a "maker of bedsteads for the Southern market."
